Everyone Is At Risk

High blood pressure is not a condition that causes pain or discomfort. In fact, it has no obvious symptoms. Unless you and your doctor are closely watching your blood pressure, you may have no idea how high your blood pressure is and the damage it may be doing to your heart, kidneys, brain and eyes.

Overtime, damage to the blood vessels may occur. These include:
• Hardening and stiffening
• Narrowing
• Breaking
• Clots

The resulting damage may cause the following complications:
• Heart attack
• Kidney disease
• Stroke
• Heart failure

Are You In A High Risk Category?

One out of every four adults in the United States has high blood pressure. Some people are at higher risk for developing high blood pressure than others, including:
• African-Americans and Hispanics – especially women
• Men over the age of 55
• Post-menopausal women
• People with relatives who have a history of high blood pressure
• People who smoke
• People with high cholesterol
• People with diabetes
• People who are overweight
• Women over the age of 35 who take birth control pills

According to the American Heart Association, high blood pressure is two to three times more common in women taking birth control pills than those not taking them, particularly in women who are overweight or obese

While high blood pressure is a disease that can affect anyone, it is of particular concern to African American and Hispanic populations. Not only does high blood pressure begin earlier among these groups, its complications are more frequent and it leads to death more often.

Know Your Numbers

Healthcare professionals use a blood pressure cuff to measure a patient’s blood pressure. It is important to have your blood pressure checked regularly. The procedure is fast, easy, and painless.

A blood pressure reading is composed of two numbers:
• Systolic (top number):
◊ Measurement of the blood pressure when the heart is pumping
• Diastolic (bottom number):
◊ Measurement of the blood pressure when the heart is relaxed

Medical guidelines state that a normal blood pressure reading for most adults is less than 120/80.

For most people drug treatment is recommended if your blood pressure is at or above 140/90.

Research Study Opportunity

We are conducting a research study evaluating the effectiveness of an investigational medication in combination with an approved medication for the treatment of high blood pressure.

To qualify, participants must:
• Be at least 18 years old
• Have known or suspected high blood pressure

Qualifi ed participants will receive all study-related care, including physical examinations, laboratory tests and investigational medications.
